UlcerGard for Horses – A Trusted Preventative for Equine Ulcers

If you’ve spent any time managing performance horses, you know how common and serious equine gastric ulcers can be. Between travel, training, and changes in feed or routine, many horses are at risk. That’s why UlcerGard has become a go-to product in my horse care toolkit, especially when I want to prevent ulcers before they start.

In this post, I’ll share my honest experience using UlcerGard as a preventative, how I use it, and why I recommend it to fellow horse owners.

What Is UlcerGard?

UlcerGard is an FDA-approved, over-the-counter paste designed to prevent equine gastric ulcers. It contains omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor that reduces stomach acid — the root cause of most ulcers in horses.

It’s not a treatment for active ulcers (that would be GastroGard, also omeprazole-based), but it’s the only FDA-approved medication for prevention — especially during times of stress like:

  • Trailering or hauling
  • Competition
  • Changes in feed or environment
  • Stall rest
  • Heavy training schedules

Why I Use UlcerGard Preventatively

I’ve used UlcerGard for years — mainly for horses that are traveling, competing, or going through a stressful transition. Here’s what I’ve found:

It works. I’ve noticed reduced signs of stress (like girthiness, poor appetite, and moodiness) in horses I put on UlcerGard during show weekends or long trailer hauls.

It’s easy to administer. The paste is marked by weight (1/4 tube = 1 dose for a 1,100 lb horse), and the horses tolerate it well.

It gives peace of mind. Especially for high-performance horses who are naturally ulcer-prone.

How I Dose It (For Prevention)

  • 1/4 tube daily starting the day before travel or a stressful event
  • Continue daily during the event or stressor
  • One more dose the day after to cover the rebound period

You can give it directly in the mouth like a dewormer. I usually give it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach if possible.

Where to Buy UlcerGard

You can buy UlcerGard online without a prescription. I recommend purchasing from a trusted source to avoid counterfeits. I have provided a link below the picture of the product. Press the button or here.

Cheers, Thanks – Ashley
